Nature Bridge

Nature Bridge

the Story

I really enjoy wood working and building. I thought it would make me a better architect if I had more hands-on building experience, so I signed up for a design build workshop. The cool thing about this workshop was that it’s always a different project. The project usually benefits the community. It’s a win win; I get to learn something and help out the community. For our project, we designed a bridge that crossed a river to a nature preserve. The idea was to give folks a safe place to cross. When we started the design, we wanted to make sure it would last for a long time. It was designed to withstand a 100-year flood. Two weeks after we installed the bridge, there happen to be a 100-year flood. If you look at the last picture you can see that it just missed our bridge. The math worked out. Unfortunately, a lot of folks in the area were not as lucky.

This was such an amazing project to be a part of and I learned so much. We stayed up late designing and sketching out ideas. We worked hard together, with folks I just met for the first time. I am so thankful to have been a part of this project.
