City Cabin

the Story
The clients inherited this property from their grandparents. There was a house on the site, but it was so old and rotted out from damage over the years it didn’t make sense to remodel, so we built a new house. The clients always wanted to have a cabin feel, but in the city. There was enough variety of home styles in this neighborhood, so we felt like we could do anything and it would fit in. We broke the house into 2 sides; one we called the party wing and the other the private wing. The party wing had the kitchen, dining room and living room. The private wing had the bedrooms and bathrooms. In the backyard we had a large, at-grade deck space for entertaining guests. The clients wanted to build green as much as possible so we designed a great high performance home, but the price was too high. We ended up switching to SIPS (Structurally Insulated Panels) and dramatically reduced the cost. It was the first prefabricated panel project I worked on. The home is anticipated to be a net-zero energy home once complete.
