Traditional Meets Modern

Traditional Meets Modern

the Story

This is an old Tudor home that sits on top of a hill in the Queen Ann neighborhood of Seattle, WA. They had the most epic views off the back of the house. From the back deck, you can see Puget Sound with all the ferries making their crossings, as well as, the city skyline with the Space Needle perfectly centered. Originally the clients wanted to knock down the house and build a modern home, but we explained the value of keeping the original home as it maintains the character of the neighborhood. From the street side of the house all you see is the traditional home, but at the back of the house we included a modern box addition making a clear separation between old and new. Inside we used traditional details with more squared-off trim profiles for an updated look. We incorporated some really fun features like a hidden room behind one of the bookshelves in the piano room that leads to a map room. This project required great focus to find a way to seamlessly integrate all the trim work, casework and finish details.
